The Blowing Rock

The Blowing Rock park, south of Boone, one of NC's most famous landmarks. It is the stuff of legend, looking over the Johns River Gorge 3,000 feet below.

I hate cameras. They are so much more sure than I am about everything. --John Steinbeck

What a great shot! I remember being there when I was 19 or 20... the wind was rather surprising - but what a view!
Larry Bliss: Truly spectacular... unfortunately the site is junked-up for kids.

Enticing drama here, Larry.
Larry Bliss: I felt uneasy around it...

I would like to see more of its setting if possible, Larry
Larry Bliss: I didn't stay up there long. Heights bother me.

a great composition - oh, it looks dangerous to step forward on this rock. I like the thoughtful quotation.
Larry Bliss: I love that quote, from a guy who knew his words.

Precarious stuff Larry
Larry Bliss: Yet teenagers climbed the rock fearlessly... perhaps stupidly.
i have no doubt that the view would be terrific, Larry
Larry Bliss: It was magnificent...

Johnny Steinbeck, much reviled but now gaining in stature. Perhaps one day he will be accepted into the pantheon of American writers.
Larry Bliss: I think he is already there, judging from his appearances on high school readings lists. Not aware of any controversy around him, except from bluenoses.
I love a good legend and this one is a cracker Larry
Larry Bliss: Hokey in just the right way.

It must be something to (try and) stand there during a strong wind.
Larry Bliss: I wouldn't know. I never left the safe side of the railing.
I'm sure it is recognizable amongst the other promontories.
Larry Bliss: It stands out.
Not a spot I got to when I spent a few weeks at Chapel Hill years ago.
Larry Bliss: Over at UNC it's the professors that are craggy. smile
Wouldn't want to get too close to the edge, Larry; that's a long way down. A good legend for the Blowing Rock.
Larry Bliss: I went to another spot, ominously named Hanging Rock, that was even worse. smile
