A Quick Tour of a Modern Monastery #1

This is a scene from Mepkin Abbey near Charleston, South Carolina, a Trappist monastery established in 1949. I sojourned there earlier this month. The other retreatants are leaving church and returning to their rooms. Live oaks with Spanish moss predominate.

Ah...Treebeard's Winter retreat.
Larry Bliss: I had to look that up... which shows a gap in my literary education.
I can only imagine how peaceful you must have felt just being there!
Larry Bliss: Very much so... to live on a slower, simpler timeline...

I hope you got out of the experience whatever it was you sought for yourself Larry
Larry Bliss: I did, and much more.
I think we could all benefit from a retreat from life in this mad world
Larry Bliss: A poet said, the world is too much with us. Indeed! Here's to solitude.

A tranquil spot. Those monks are not bothering with robes.
Larry Bliss: Sorry to correct you, but you are looking at the other guests on the retreat. The monks are robed in white.
I have been to a Trappist Monastery during my youth. I just looked it up to see if it was still there.

Larry Bliss: I just looked at the site. I bet the Trappist apple cider is heavenly!
A former neighbour of ours attended retreats like this at least once a year and found it to be quite beneficial. Love how you've framed the figures between the two trees with the hanging moss, Larry.
